The take
The dialog opens on the microphone and its level, with a warning when the signal reaches full scale and will distort. Mono is the usual choice for one voice; stereo, for a stereo microphone or line input, sits under Advanced, with hearing the microphone while recording. A quiet take says so afterwards and is brought up with one press, and the browser's automatic level can be turned on under Advanced.
Over a backing track
Recording starts at the playhead, so a second take goes where the first stopped, or over the music on another track. The other tracks play while you record, and each block of input is stamped with the time that was being heard when it arrived, so the take lands in time with them; an extra correction in milliseconds sits under Advanced for a device that still runs late.
If the tab closes
A take is written to disk as it is recorded. A take cut off by a crash or a closed tab is put back on its own track the next time the project is opened.
After the take
Trim keeps the selected time, Split cuts at the playhead, Fade in and Fade out shape the ends, and the tab on the clip's top edge sets its gain. Export writes the mix, or each track as its own file, all the same length so that they line up again.
What recording cannot do yet
One microphone at a time, and no second one has been tried. A take goes on a new track: recording onto an existing track (append, punch in) is not there, nor a count-in or a metronome. Recording asks nothing of the network, but has not yet been tried offline. On a phone, Record works in a sheet and the screen is kept awake where the phone allows it (Safari 16.4 and later, Chrome), tried in emulation only.
Questions
- Does it ask for the microphone every time?
- The browser asks the first time this site wants the microphone and remembers the answer as the browser decides. The dialog says when it is waiting for that question and where it is.
- Can I record over music?
- Yes. Open the music as a track, put the playhead where the voice starts and press Record; the music plays while you record and the take lands in time with it.
- Where does the recording go?
- Into the project, on its own track, in the browser's storage on this device. Export writes it out as WAV, FLAC, MP3, M4A or Ogg.
