Open an Audacity project
in your browser.

You have an Audacity project, a .aup3 or .aup4, and no Audacity that opens it: the wrong version, a new computer, a phone. Press Open a file and the project opens on this page, named after the file, with its tracks and clips as you left them, ready to trim and export.

What comes across

An Audacity 3 project (.aup3) or an Audacity 4 project (.aup4) opens as a project of its own: each track in its lane with its name, gain, pan and mute, and each clip where it lay. Audacity's labels become markers and regions under the ruler. The first open fetches the reader, about 1 MB, from this site, so it needs a connection once; the reader is kept, and later opens need none.

Export to MP3

Export writes the mix, each track, each region, or the stretches from one marker to the next, as WAV, FLAC, MP3, M4A or Ogg. Chapters writes your markers into the file where podcast apps look for them: MP3, M4A, Ogg and FLAC; a WAV carries none, and Apple's apps do not read an M4A's.

Trim and split first

The imported clips edit like any other. Trim keeps only the selected time and removes everything outside it, Split cuts a clip in two at the playhead, and Fade in and Fade out shape its ends. Every edit can be undone with Ctrl+Z (Ctrl means Cmd on a Mac).

Where a phone stops

The full editor is laid out for a tablet or a computer, in a current Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari. On a phone, below 768 px, the layout is trim, delete, split, fades, Process, Record and Export, with a finger; gain, pan, effects, markers and the transcript need a larger screen. The phone layout has been tried in emulation only, not on a real phone.

What does not come across

Audacity's effect settings stay behind: a track arrives with its audio as the project stores it and no effect set on it. Next to Audacity, nothing here stands in for its generators, its time-stretch and pitch per clip, its sample-level drawing, its macros and batch, or its preferences for devices and quality. A project that needs one of those is a project for Audacity.

Questions

Can I open a .aup3 file without Audacity?
Yes. Press Open a file and choose the .aup3; it opens as a project on this page with no Audacity installed. .aup3 (Audacity 3) and .aup4 (Audacity 4) are the two project formats read.
How do I convert a .aup3 to MP3?
Open the project, press Export, keep the mix as what to export and choose MP3. The file is written to your computer; with markers in the project, Export can write them into it as chapters.
Does it work on a phone?
Trim and Export do, in the phone layout, which has been tried in emulation only. Gain, pan, effects and markers need a tablet or a computer.
